Role of the Memorial Mission Advocate

Did you know that the Memorial Union Building at UNH was built as the official state of New Hampshire War Memorial? In 1999 the Memorial Union Board of Governors recognized that promoting the building's memorial mission and preserving its history was an important part of their job as a board and created a new board position, The Memorial Mission Advocate. The Advocate serves as a one person committee to work both within the University community to promote the room and to be a liason to groups beyond the University community with concerns.
The Memorial Building at UNH with its war memorial room was created to help people remember those who had given their lives in military service from the state of New Hampshire. Funds to create this one of a kind building came from a variety of sources: alumni, businesses, and civic groups. Former Governor Hugh Gregg signed the original proclamation dedicating the building. When the building was renovated in the 90's the memorial room was rededicated and Hugh Gregg brought a new proclamation with him from Governor Stephen Merrill recognizing the room's importance.
The Memorial Mission Advocate helps coordinate matters pertaining to the war memorial room on behalf of the Board of Governors and the Building Permanent Staff. Each year on Veteran's Day the Advocate organizes a "field trip" to the room for the MUB's Governing Board to discuss the room's significance. Local Alumni Veterans are on hand at that meeting to share their experiences and recollections of classmates whose names appear on the wall. The Advocate has also begun a comprehensive inventory of all names appearing on the wall to gather a historical record for educational puposes. We would welcome any help anyone can give us in order to add to the information we currently have about names that appear on our wall. Additionally, the Advocate is working with members of the MUB permanent staff and community at large to establish a policy for adding new plaques to the room for Military events since Vietnam. If you would support this endeavor we'd like to hear from you. The Advocate, MUB Board and MUB permanent staff worked with the Office of Sustainability to create a Memorial Garden area in the front of the building that incorporates native species and gives people a place for peaceful reflection outside. Keep checking this page for additional updates and information. If you want to contact the Advocate call the Board of Governor's office at 603-862-1714.
