MAILBOXES:

Who has mailboxes? All freshman and transfer undergraduates up to the age of 24 who do not live in the Gables, Babcock Hall, or Woodside Apartments are automatically assigned a GSS mailbox in the Memorial Union Building (including those who live off-campus). If you are continuing on to Graduate School at UNH, you must e-mail a request to maintain your GSS mailbox number.

If I have not been assigned a mailbox, can I get one? Any undergraduate or graduate student not automatically assigned a mailbox may request one at the GSS Service Window or by sending us an email with the name and student ID number. Mailboxes are assigned based on availability and on a first come first serve basis. If no boxes are immediately available, a temporary box will be assigned until a permanent one becomes available.

When do I need my Student ID card? Students must bring their UNH ID cards to pick up a mailbox key and to retrieve packages.
Students must have their mailbox key to get mail. GSS staff cannot retrieve mail for a student.

KEYS:

Mailbox keys will be available to incoming freshman and transfer students at the beginning of the semester. Students who have requested a mailbox assignment can pick up the mailbox key during regular hours of operation at the Mailroom Service Window.

Students must have their student ID to receive a mailbox key. The mailbox key is yours until you graduate, leave the University or move to the Gables, Woodside Apartments, or Babcock Hall. Then you must return the key. A $50 fine will be assessed if the key is not returned within 14 days. This fine will appear on your University account.

What if I lose my key? Lost keys must be replaced. There is a $20 fee to replace lost keys. New keys can take up to 2 weeks to come in. When you order a replacement key you will be given a “key receipt”. Until your new key comes in, you can retrieve your mail by bringing your student ID and “key receipt” to the Granite Square Station window. You can request that your lock be changed for a fee of $50.

If I don't have my key with me, can staff hand me my mail? No. To ensure security all students must use their mailbox key to access their mailbox. GSS staff can never retrieve your mail for you.

MAIL:

For prompt mail and package delivery, address each item legibly as follows:

Full Name (including middle name/initial) of Student
[Student's individual box number] + Granite Square Station
Durham, NH 03824

Example:

Benjamin Paul Thompson
1234 Granite Square Station
Durham, NH 03824

Many students at the University of New Hampshire have the same or similar names. We also receive a lot of mail for past mailbox holders. This is why we ask that ALL mail and packages are addressed with your FULL first, middle, last name and GSS box number.

If your mail or package is not addressed clearly and correctly, we may return it to the sender rather than risk delivering it to the wrong person. We ask that all senders include a complete return address on mail and packages.

When is mail placed in my box? The US Postal Service (USPS) and UPS both make delivery to Granite Square Station around 10:00am each morning during the school year. FedEx and DHL make delivery throughout the day. Due to the large volume of mail and packages we receive, we cannot guarantee a time each day when mail will be placed in mailboxes. Your mail will usually be available to you by the end of the day it is received. Please be aware that items that are shipped to Granite Square Station through an express service, such as Overnight Express, may be delayed by processing and are not always able to be delivered immediately.

What happens to my mail when UNH is not in session?
During the summer, all mail is automatically forwarded to the student’s permanent address. If you would like to continue to receive mail at your GSS mailbox during the summer, a request must be made at the Mailroom Service Window. During Winter Break, mail will continue to be delivered to the student’s GSS mailbox. If you would like to have your mail forwarded to your permanent address during Winter Break, you must make a request at the Mailroom Service Window. During all other University breaks, mail will be delivered to the student’s GSS mailbox.

How do I change where my mail is forwarded to? You can change your permanent forwarding address through the Registrar's Office.

PACKAGES:

What services deliver to Granite Square Station? All delivery services (USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL) will deliver packages to GSS.

What if the delivery service says they won’t deliver to a P.O. Box? Granite Square Station is not a post office. All delivery services can deliver to GSS. If the delivery service insists on a street address, please use 83 Main Street for the street address, but be sure to also include the student’s full name and GSS box number so that we can deliver the package correctly.

Will GSS sign for incoming packages? Yes. All incoming packages are signed for by GSS staff. Packages are then logged into our system and delivered to the recipient.

Can I receive perishable items through my GSS mailbox? Yes. However, perishable items should be sent at your own risk. When we receive a perishable item, such as flowers or a food basket, we will call the recipient in addition to sending an email and placing a package slip in the mailbox. The perishable item will sit on a shelf in the mailroom until the student is able to retrieve it. GSS is not able to preserve perishable items that require refrigeration.

How will I know when a package is waiting at GSS for me? All packages are logged in within 24 hours of arrival. We begin logging in items that do not fit in a mail box as soon as we receive them. An e-mail is sent to the recipient when we log the package in. A package slip is also generated for each package logged into our system. These package slips are sorted and placed in GSS mailbox to inform the student that there is a package for them. Please be aware that items that are shipped to Granite Square Station through an express service, such as Overnight Express, may be delayed by processing and are not always able to be delivered immediately.

How do I pick up a package? To pick up a package, the student must bring both the package slip from the mailbox and the student ID to the GSS Mailroom Window. The information on the package slip tells us where we have your package stored within the mailroom, which is why you must retrieve the package slip from your box. To help us ensure that the correct person picks up each package, we also require you to present us with a picture ID.
