The Greek community has been active at the University of New Hampshire and its predecessors since 1881 with the founding of Q.T.V. fraternity at New Hampshire College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts. Currently, UNH fraternity and sorority members represent 8.1% of the campus with over 860 students as current members in the seven recognized sororities, ten fraternities and one co-educational society.

Unrecognized Group
s

The following groups lost recognition for serious risk management violations or affiliation issues and have no ties with the University of New Hampshire.

Zeta Chi Beta - ZXB
Formerly the Zeta Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity, this group lost permanent recognition from the University of New Hampshire for various policy violations in the early 1990s. The group also lost recognition from Theta Chi in 1993. In 1994, the group was charged with prostitution and the sale of alcohol during a recruitment event. The group was convicted for these offenses by the New Hampshire court system, and this conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court of New Hampshire.

Chi Phi Alpha - ΧΦΑ
Formally a chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, this group lost recognition in 2004 after a series of risk management issues that violated UNH policies.

Phi Kappa Theta – ΦΚΘ
This group lost permanent recognition from the University of New Hampshire in 2003 after a lengthy history of UNH policy violations and numerous incidents with the university and Durham police.

We strongly discourage student participation in these unrecognized groups, as the university does not provide any form of support, oversight and advisement for their members. Also, since these groups often lack national affiliation, they may not have liability insurance, or oversight policies for risk management, hazing or sexual harassment. Therefore if one of these chapters would experience a civil lawsuit, a member of that group might be held directly liable by a complainant, exposing himself/herself and their family members to unneeded risk. Furthermore, many times national organizations of these unrecognized groups choose not to acknowledge the University's concerns or to take action against their chapters.

Students who choose to become members of these unrecognized groups may not obtain all of the benefits available to those who join a recognized fraternity or sorority.  Benefits of joining a recognized fraternity or sorority include:

  1. Interaction with the other members of the UNH Greek community, consisting of 860 students and 18 chapters
  2. Use of UNH facilities for meetings and events
  3. Programming and leadership development training from the UNH Leadership Center and the Office of Greek Life
  4. Involvement in the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the Panhellenic Council, and the Greek Presidents Council
  5. Involvement in UNH community-wide events, including Jukebox, University Day, and Greek Week
  6. Involvement with student support programs, including the Alumni Center, Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention Program (SHARPP), and the Center for Academic Resources
  7. Involvement in UNH Greek Awards program and Greek Performance and Evaluation Program (GPEP)
  8. Support from the Office of Greek Life staff
